From Ideas to Databases: EKU Libraries & Noel Studio Support for ENG 102 consists of three instructional modules scaffolded to blend library and writing center (Noel Studio) support for students enrolled in ENG 102: Research, Writing and Rhetoric, Eastern Kentucky University’s second-semester first-year writing course.
The prior knowledge and experiences of each ENG 102 student differ greatly; however, many students struggle with developing research questions based on a broad research topic, identifying appropriate keywords based on that research question, and developing viable search strategies for library databases. To address these instructional needs, I developed three video tutorials with accompanying activities and/or assignments based on three simple learning objectives:
- I wanted learners to be able to create mind-maps to develop research questions;
- I wanted learners to be able to construct or write search statements representative of those research questions; and
- I wanted learners to be able to revise their search statements in response to a library database search.
Videos sans activities can be viewed at From Ideas to Databases: An EKU Libraries YouTube Playlist.
All three videos and their accompanying assignments are housed in Canvas; if you would like to be added to the Canvas learning unit, complete a request form.
From Ideas to Databases: EKU Libraries & Noel Studio Support for ENG 102 could be used to “flip the classroom” for in-person library instruction OR serve as the library instruction for an online course. Its materials could also be modified to serve learners beyond ENG 102.
