Copyright to Creative Commons: Becoming an Ethical Creator/Consumer consists of four instructional modules designed to support learners in ENG 102: Research, Writing and Rhetoric (Eastern Kentucky University’s second-semester first-year writing course) through the careful cultivation of social presence, teaching presence, and cognitive presence as defined by aligned with the Community of Inquiry framework (Garrison, Anderson, & Archer, 2001).
While college composition courses routinely teach students about plagiarism and citation styles in the context of the academic classroom, it is less common for these same courses to address intellectual property more broadly. Copyright to Creative Commons: Becoming an Ethical Creator/Consumer is designed to support learners in the ethical use of images, audio, video and other multimodal formats through a critical discussion of intellectual property and its impact beyond the classroom. I developed the long-form instructional unit based on three simple learning objectives:
- I wanted learners to be able to identify common collective and individual beliefs about intellectual property and its protections and use [copyright, public domain, and fair use];
- I wanted learners to be able to discuss their legal rights and responsibilities with respect to intellectual property; and
- I wanted learners to be able to start developing ethical behaviors as creators and consumers of intellectual property.
The unit includes both original and compiled material and is housed in Canvas; if you would like to be added to the Canvas learning unit, complete a request form.
Copyright to Creative Commons: Becoming an Ethical Creator/Consumer could be used to “flip the classroom” for in-person library instruction OR serve as the library instruction for an online course. It could also be modified to serve learners beyond ENG 102.
